Aniimo's AI controversy contains two separate records. On 27 and 28 July 2026, players circulated advertisements they identified as AI-generated. On 29 July, the official Aniimo account apologized, disabled the ads and said their production was not representative of how the game is made. The second record concerns the game itself: in a developer answer preserved on Reddit by 3 July, Pawprint Studio ruled out AI design for Aniimo and AI prototypes in Idyll, while acknowledging that AI helps the team with testing and other unspecified tasks.
Those statements answer part of the production question. They are not a tool-by-tool or asset-by-asset account of the game's development.

- 111 December 2025: the accusation appears on Steam
Steam user Crypto Highwind opened a discussion titled "Looks like Gen AI/Gacha Palworld, ew". The opening post said only "just ew." The discussion showed 69 posts when checked on 31 August 2026.
- 23 July 2026: players ask about the game itself
Reddit user twilighttnebula asked whether generative AI had been used anywhere in the game. The "Generative AI Usage?" thread reached 53 comments. In a comment that day, CelisC reproduced a Pawprint answer and attributed it to the official Aniimo Discord's #team-answers channel.
- 327 July 2026: an Instagram advertisement becomes the focus
Reddit user fegodev posted "Aniimo promoting game using AI slop on Instagram" and linked the advertisement. The thread reached 166 comments.
- 428 July 2026: the advertising criticism spreads
Reddit user Soul_ShadowXD shared an AniimoSync creator video under the title "This AI Ad Is A HUGE Mistake". That thread reached 135 comments. Later the same day, fegodev posted a second advertisement seen on Facebook, drawing 163 comments.
- 529 July 2026: the Aniimo Team responds
The Aniimo_Official Reddit account acknowledged the advertising feedback, apologized, and said the ads had been removed from its channels and disabled. The response reached 155 comments.
- 630 August 2026: zero-generative-AI labelling becomes part of community posting
Reddit user Jaejyu published an Aniimo glyph decipher labelled "ZERO GENERATIVE AI VERSION". Jaejyu said the guide had been republished after they learned of a zero-generative-AI rule. That post documents a community disclosure practice. It does not provide evidence about the game's production.
The four advertising and response threads totalled 619 comments at the 31 August check. That number measures the size of the Reddit conversation around the ads. It does not measure agreement among participants or prove any claim about the game.
Question 1: What Happened With the Ads?
Between 27 and 28 July 2026, fegodev and Soul_ShadowXD posted two advertisements and a creator reaction that they explicitly described as AI-generated. The threads identified Instagram and Facebook as the places where the advertisements appeared.
On 29 July, the Aniimo Team responded through Aniimo_Official. The statement referred to "some recent advertisements," apologized for the disappointment and frustration they caused, and said the means by which they were produced were not representative of how the game itself was being made. It also said the advertisements had been removed from Aniimo's channels, disabled as active ads, and could remain visible in some places because of technical limitations.
The official response did not use the words "generative AI" in its body. It confirmed the disputed advertisements, the team's decision to remove and disable them, and the separation it drew between advertising production and game production. It did not name the production tool, the producer or the approval process.
Question 2: Does That Establish How the Game Was Made?
No. An advertisement is evidence about an advertisement. It does not establish the origin of an in-game model, texture, line of dialogue, music track or interface element.
Pawprint's own statements are the relevant record for the game. By 3 July 2026, CelisC had reproduced a developer Q&A answer in the Reddit thread and attributed it to the official Discord. The answer said AI would not be used to design Aniimo, that no AI prototypes would be used in Idyll, and that AI was helping in several ways, with testing given as the example.
The visible game material is a different kind of evidence again. AniimoVerse's Gamescom trailer breakdown, Aniilog creature index and puzzle guide document footage, creature records and observed beta mechanics. They show what players could see or do. They do not document the production pipeline behind those assets.
What Pawprint Studio Actually Said
| Date and speaker | Public wording | What it covers |
|---|---|---|
| By 3 July 2026, Pawprint answer reproduced by CelisC | "AI will NOT be used to design our Aniimo" and AI helps in several ways, "e.g. testing" | Aniimo design, prototypes in Idyll and an acknowledged testing use |
| 29 July 2026, the Aniimo Team through Aniimo_Official | The creatures, stories and world come from the Pawprint team's work, and the ad-production method was "not representative" of game production | The creative vision for Aniimo, Idyll and stories, plus the separation between ads and game development |
The first answer is category-specific. It rules out AI design for Aniimo and AI prototypes in Idyll, then acknowledges AI assistance without defining every use. The 29 July statement names creatures, stories and the world as work produced by Pawprint's human team. Neither statement is an itemised disclosure covering every tool, vendor and asset category.
The 29 July statement also does not identify who made the advertisements. Community comments proposed explanations involving outside advertising firms, but the Aniimo Team did not name a supplier or describe an outsourcing arrangement in the statement. Those explanations remain community claims.
What Remains Unanswered
At the 31 August 2026 review, the public statements left four narrow questions open:
- Which AI-assisted tasks exist beyond testing? The Pawprint answer says AI helps in several ways and gives testing as one example. It does not list the others or say whether the term refers to generative systems, non-generative systems, or both.
- What exactly did "testing" involve? The answer does not identify the tool, the inputs, the outputs or whether any output could reach the shipped game.
- Does the statement cover every shipped asset category? It expressly covers Aniimo design, AI prototypes in Idyll, creatures, stories and the world. It does not publish a category-by-category account of interface art, music, voices, localisation, code or other production materials.
- Who produced and approved the advertisements? The 29 July response accepts responsibility for the ads and their removal, but does not identify the people or companies involved in making or approving them.
