Aniimo is not built around pulling its creature roster. It is built around finding and catching Aniimo in the open world. Its launch route for Irisalis follows the same philosophy: earn legendary tokens through play, craft a personal pod and complete one exclusive encounter.
That is the honest answer. Calling the game a conventional character gacha ignores how both its main collection loop and its Legendary route work. The July test did contain a separate chance-based event, but that system has been removed from the launch build.

Two Systems Sit Beside Each Other
The main roster and Legendary encounters use different structures, but both begin with play in Idyll rather than a summon menu.

The ordinary loop is encounter, weaken or approach, choose an Aniipod and catch. The catching guide covers the devices and field rules.
Irisalis does not use an ordinary wild spawn. Legendary tokens come from world exploration and story progress, and collecting them is incorporated into everyday exploration and catching. Once the player crafts a personal Legendary Aniipod, the exclusive Irisalis encounter appears on the map.
That difference makes Irisalis a dedicated quest, but not a random character pull.
What Pawprint Studio Said
On 26 June 2026, executive producer Jovi Zhang told MMORPG.com that Aniimo was "definitely not a gacha game." His explanation was about the relationship between a creature and its habitat. Pawprint wanted players to meet Aniimo in Idyll, understand where they live and form a bond through that encounter. A summon screen would skip the environment that gives the creature meaning.
The same interview said no Aniimo would be locked behind gacha pulls and that pulling for specific characters was not part of the game. Zhang also said the core systems would provide a free route for players to build their ideal Aniimo.
The launch Irisalis design now applies that position to a Legendary. Token progress grows through the world, the player crafts the key item personally and the bond closes inside an exclusive story battle.
Why the Launch Irisalis Route Is Not a Gacha Pull
The launch route has no random direct-Irisalis reward and no chain of repeat attempts. Progress comes from ordinary play, and the acquisition sequence has a defined ending.
- 1Collect legendary tokens
Explore the world, progress the story and catch Aniimo during normal play.
- 2Craft the personal pod
The Legendary Aniipod is made for this route rather than rolled from a reward table.
- 3Open the exclusive encounter
Crafting the pod makes the Irisalis encounter appear on the map.
- 4Complete the story battle
Follow the story, defeat Irisalis and throw the pod you made to seal the bond.
The complete Irisalis unlock guide documents that flow. It is an earned quest and crafting route with a one-time encounter, which strengthens Pawprint's argument that Aniimo acquisition belongs in the world rather than on a summon screen.
Pawprint says this design is the template for every Legendary Aniimo encounter to come. Future Legendaries therefore follow the same broad structure: exploration progress, a personal crafted pod and an exclusive story encounter.
Why Players Asked the Gacha Question
The July test used a different Irisalis event. Each attempt consumed an entry resource, the reward depended on a timed second phase, a direct Irisalis result was random and repeated misses built toward a fixed exchange. That structure prompted a 499-comment discussion and made the gacha comparison mechanically understandable.
Players disagreed about the label. Some treated the event as a disguised pull system. Others treated it as an ordinary event grind with a lucky early finish. Both sides were looking at the same chance-based structure, and that structure has now been removed.
A separate July discussion compared Legendary Aniimo appearance customization with the Legendary weapon reroll in Where Winds Meet. That system was cosmetic, with separate appearance categories and no combat stats attached. It belongs near the gacha debate because it is another randomized spend, but it is not how Irisalis is acquired.
The distinction matters. A cosmetic reroll can be judged separately from a creature acquisition route. Folding both into one vague accusation makes the answer less precise.
Are Any Aniimo Locked Behind Payment?
For the ordinary roster, creatures are caught in the world rather than won from character pulls. Irisalis follows progress earned through world exploration, the story and everyday catching before the personal Legendary Aniipod can be crafted.
Trading is another unpaid acquisition route for regular Aniimo, but its limits matter. The Aniimo trading guide documents friend exchanges for regular creatures, with wider basic, regional and weather-form access as Affinity rises. Trading is not a substitute for Irisalis's personal quest route.
So, Is Aniimo a Gacha Game?
Not in the conventional sense that defines the roster. Aniimo does not ask players to build their creature collection by pulling characters from banners. Its main promise is to explore Idyll, find Aniimo where they live and catch them.
The launch Legendary route is not a pull system either. Irisalis sits behind exploration and story progress, a crafted personal pod and one exclusive encounter. Winning the battle and throwing that pod seals the bond.
The clean conclusion is specific: Aniimo's core collection game is not gacha, and the launch route for Legendary Aniimo reinforces that design. The old chance-based event explains why players asked the question, but it no longer defines how Irisalis is acquired.
